miscellaneous head/-canon and information:
I play Gokudera pretty strictly from the manga, but I find it both useful and interesting to extrapolate on my own and flesh out the gaps with information from the anime, novel, and information book canons. With all of that in mind, what's written below is a conglomeration of all of the above, with sources listed for translations as necessary, and should not be taken extremely inflexibly.
on identity:
→ name meaning: 獄寺 Gokudera = prison/lawsuit + court/temple (獄 = 犭/言/犬 = dog/words/dog); 隼人 Hayato = falcon + person (fan translation)
→ name origin: I hypothesize that "Gokudera" is his mother's surname, since his Japanese heritage comes from her side, and Bianchi is never referred to by that name. She also never refers to him by his whole name, which might have something more to it than the fact that siblings usually don't refer to each other by their full names. I imagine that it's a point of sensitivity for him, and that he deliberately chose to use his mother's name in defiance of his father.
→ alias: "Smoking Bomb" is his crime alias, go figure! (Though the anime used "Hurricane Bomb" in the end.) He is well known by and comfortable with this title, though these days "Vongola Storm" might be most appropriate.
on family:
→ parents: unnamed father; Italian mafia boss (manga) & mother, Lavina; Italian/Japanese pianist (name from anime)
→ siblings: half-sister Bianchi, three years his senior
→ other: (reluctant) mentor Dr. Shamal
on daily life:
→ supposedly "worked" undercover as a convenience store worker at one point (Rebo to Dlive)

on substance use:
→ chainsmoker, no matter how much the anime skirted around it, though he does smoke less and less as time goes on in the manga — I hypothesize that he started to ease up as time went on, but it's a habit that persists into his adulthood (manga); I hypothesize that he probably started smoking pretty young, and began out of practical reasons (to light his dynamite), but also to "improve" his image.
→ his novel story (Bakudan Bambino) briefly — but nevertheless pretty explicitly — depicts 12-year-old Gokudera using bribe money to go bar hopping, to the point that he wakes up the next afternoon on the street; though the manga's never addressed him drinking, I think it's believable for him to have messed around while he was on his own.
